Admitted to ACHS: 1972 Founded at Dakota Wesleyan University, 1924 No of Active Chapters: 821 No of Alumni Chapters/Clubs: 1 Annual/current Membership: 9000 Number of Regions: 6 Publications: The Rectangle, The Sigma Tau Delta Review | PURPOSE: To confer distinction for high achievement in undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies in English language, literature, and writing; to provide cultural stimulation on college campuses; and to serve society by fostering literacy. ELIGIBILITY: Candidates for undergraduate membership must have completed at least three semesters or five quarters of college work and a minimum of two college courses in English language or literature beyond the usual requirements in freshman English. They must also have a minimum of a B or equivalent grade point average in English, and rank at least in the highest 35 percent of their class in general scholarship. Candidates for graduate membership must be enrolled in a graduate program in English, or one of its specializations, have completed six semester hours of graduate work or the equivalent, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. MAJOR ACTIVITIES: Publication of The Sigma Tau Delta Rectangle (an annual literary journal of non-fiction, fiction, and poetry) and The Sigma Tau Delta Review (an annual journal of critical essays on literature, essays on rhetoric and composition, and essays devoted to pedagogical issues); awarding of writing awards of up to $500 (creative writing, poetry, critical writing, short story); holding an annual international convention and several regional conferences; providing annual scholarships and awards of up to $5,000 each and Outstanding Chapter Awards of up to $500 each; allocating chapter project grants of up to $500 each.
