Admitted to ACHS: 1945 Founded at the University of Arkansas, March 14, 1921 No of Active Chapters: 900 Total Membership: 320000 Publications: The Historian, The News Letter | PURPOSE: To recognize and encourage excellence in the study of history. ELIGIBILITY: Undergraduate students must rank in the upper thirty-five percent of their class, must have had at least 12 semester hours in history (4 courses) with a GPA of at least 3.1 in History and 3.0 or better overall, and must have completed 3 semesters of college work. Graduate students must have completed at least 12 semester hours toward their Master's degree in History and have a GPA of better than 3.5. Faculty members above the rank of instructor who teach History qualify automatically for membership. MAJOR ACTIVITIES: Publication of The Historian (a quarterly journal of history) and The News Letter (issued three times yearly). Approximately 40 annual regional meetings. Phi Alpha Theta luncheons at meetings of major national historical associations. Nine annual scholarships (for student members entering graduate school or at doctoral level). An annual contest for papers on historical subjects with six prizes at both undergraduate and graduate student levels. Annual grants of two awards for the best first and subsequent books in history published by members. Six annual awards for the best chapter in each category of college enrollment. A grant for the publication of the best manuscript in the field of history submitted by a member during the current year. An annual grant for advanced work by a faculty advisor.
