Admitted to ACHS: 1976 Founded at Illinois State Normal University, 1931 (founded as a local in 1928; became national in 1931) No of Active Chapters: 288 No of Alumni Chapters/Clubs: 1 Total Membership: 61000 Annual/current Membership: 1285 Number of Regions: 8 Publications: Geographical Bulletin | PURPOSE: To further professional interest, to strengthen student and professional training, to advance the status of geography as a cultural and practical discipline, to encourage student research, and to create and administer funds for furthering graduate study and/or research. ELIGIBILITY: Initiates must have completed a minimum of 3 geography courses, have a GPA of at least 3.3 overall and in geography and shall have completed at least 3 semesters or 5 quarters of college course work. MAJOR ACTIVITIES: Each chapter plans its own activities. An annual society business meeting is held in conjunction with either the Association of American Geographers conference or the National Council for Geographic Education conference. Award certificates may be presented to outstanding students in each chapter. Eleven scholarships of $1,000 each are given annually to undergraduates and graduates.
