Admitted to ACHS: 1969 Founded at the University of Illinois, August 1948 No of Active Chapters: 48 Total Membership: 40000 Publications: The Pipeline Online Newsletter, Monograph Series | PURPOSE: Recognition of superior academic achievement in library and information science; sponsorship of professional and scholarly projects. ELIGIBILITY: Active membership is open to graduates of schools of library and information science with masters programs accredited by the American Library Association who have earned an academic average in their professional studies of at least 3.75 (where A=4.0). No more than 25% of a given graduating class may be nominated. Each eligible candidate must also be recommended for election by the faculty of the candidate's school. MAJOR ACTIVITIES: The Distinguished Service to Library Education Award, first given by Beta Phi Mu in 1954, has been, since 1956, an official award of the American Library Association. This is an annual award for which Beta Phi Mu supplies the honorarium. The society has developed scholarship programs for beginning students and for Beta Phi Mu members who wish to engage in continuing education and for foreign study. The society also provides Doctoral Dissertation grants. The Monograph publication is a major activity of the society.
