Admitted to ACHS: 1939 Founded at the University of Illinois on May 31, 1924 No of Active Chapters: 257 Total Membership: 854044 Publications: The Flame | PURPOSE: The purpose of the society is to encourage superior scholastic attainment among students in their first year in institutions of higher education, to promote intelligent living and a continued high standard of learning, and to assist women and men in recognizing and developing meaningful goals for their roles in society. ELIGIBILITY: Membership is based on superior academic achievements by students during their first year of college. The student must be registered for a full load of courses leading to a bachelor’s degree. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better (based on A=4.0) at the end of any curricular period during their first year of college and rank in the top 20% of the freshman class. Students are active during the year following induction, but enjoy life membership in the society. MAJOR ACTIVITIES: Chapters plan activities which encourage, honor, and promote academic excellence. Many chapters are involved in service projects. The National Council sponsors an annual student workshop to promote leadership and programming.
