Admitted to ACHS: 1955 Founded at a conference of Texas colleges held on the campus of Southwestern University, Georgetown, Texas, February 22, 1922 No of Active Chapters: 334 No of Alumni Chapters/Clubs: 2 Total Membership: 385970 Number of Regions: 7 Publications: Alpha Chi Recorder, Alpha Chi Newsletter | PURPOSE: To encourage sound scholarship and devotion to truth, not only among members but among all students on chapter campuses. Opposed to bigotry, narrowness, and discrimination on any basis other than that of academic achievement or character. ELIGIBILITY: Active membership is restricted to the top ten percent of juniors, seniors, and graduate students. The faculty may set higher standards. High scholarship is the primary requisite for membership, but good character and reputation are considerations. Although membership is for life, alumni may maintain active status by paying an annual fee. MAJOR ACTIVITIES: The Constitution calls for regular chapter meetings promoting and recognizing scholarly achievement. Visiting speakers are presented; student papers are read; faculty-led discussions are held. Free tutoring is done by some chapters; some recognize achievement by granting scholarships. At regional and national meetings, student members take part in presenting papers, musical and entertainment features, panel discussions, and in voting on policies and actions.
