Retention Issues as students families are unable to pay tuititon due to recession layoffs Tuitions Increases Employment opportunities for graduates diminishing and students appreciate the need for membership in honor society on their resumes. - abg

The growth of distance learning makes it harder for institutions to feel confident about fairly identifying students who qualify for honor society membership. The proliferation of proprietary colleges and their impact on the face of higher ed and on the traditional college campus that has been our base since 1922. - ac

Our academic discipline is in the midst of a transition, and many departments have been absorbed or merged with other related departments. Given this trend the number of chapters may eventually see a decline. - ae

Larger classes at medical schools Larger #'s of applicants to health profession schools Second career students - aed

The economic downturn has led to a decreasing amount of money available for student travel to the annual convention and regional conferences. - aer

1. Schools are consolidating departments, leading to less visibility for decision sciences and information systems. 2. Increase in competitive associations who have honor societies. - aid

A trend in higher education that has had a negative impact on AKD (and we suspect on other honor societies) is the pressure on faculty to publish and seek external research funding. This trand has minimized the potential reward in terms of promotion, tenure, and merit raises generated by working with students and student organizations. - akd

Tight educational funding - akm

Economy, recession Green themes student enrollment - impact of recession, banking crunch, unemployment, loans Millennial Generation and technology - ald

Use of electronics and technology - aps

More group activity encouraging collaborations and partnerships in achieving goals incorporating sustainability concepts and philosophies in the design of products and systems used by everyone. - apm

Many BGS members are students from abroad who study in the U.S. The desirability of the U.S. as a study destination for international students is a major factor. - bgs

Higher education has a direct link to exposure and personal pragmatic activities of the individual. By attending this conference, the numbers of participants at local and national levels has exponentially increased. There must be a conscious push and increased awareness in majors such as, environmental biology, molecular biology, toxicology, pharmacology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computer science, physics, psychology and science education. Students who have previously attended the conference have demonstrated that this experiential activity as such, has increased their interest in their scientific discipline, improved knowledge of basic principles and concepts regarding environmental science, and has taught the student that research careers can make important contributions to society on a global scale. - bkc

As noted last year: online education - chapters at both traditional and non-traditional (for profit) promise to challenge our expectations for service to our members and chapters. CSI adopted the ACHS Guidelines for Chartering Chapters. As a consequence, we also began enforcing our Bylaws relative to chapter responsibilities to membership services. After two years of repeated efforts to help revive inactive chapters, we have deleted almost fifty chapters from our list. In addition, we accepted the chartering of chapters associated with online counselor education programs. In order to be chartered, all chapters must be associated with nationally accredited counselor education programs. Our highest hopes are for the online institutions to help us learn more effective ways to network with members and to serve them through the use of newer technologies. Our concerns are the large numbers of students that they serve and potential for becoming no more than a line on a member’s vita as a part of their education as a professional counselor. - csi

The Student Research Conference has as its goals: • Encourage academic examination of public communication with a focus on competitive communication •Develop the research and writing skills of students of communication •Further dialogue about the power and responsibility of public rhetoric and rhetoricians - dsrtka

Decline in enrollment in agriculture will impact the number of students that are eligible to join DTA. - dta

The potential for a partnership between PLTW (Project Lead the Way) and Epsilon Pi Tau whereby PLTW students would be honored for their academic success makes for a strong win-win-win situation. The students win for being recognized, PLTW wins for having helped provide students with professional recognition. Such a partnership has the potential for future general membership into EPT once students matriculate into college and university programs. - ept

Geotechnologies continue to attract large numbers of students, many of whom may be eligible for membership. Not all of these potential members will be geography majors so this allows us to reach students beyond our traditional base. - gtu

Reorganization that often has an adverse effect on human sciences programs Green and social responsibility commitments that honor societies could join - kon

Distance learning continues to grow. Well-organized and conducted programs benefit practically everyone. However, one wonders about the long-range impact on organizations that achieve their highest level when people meet occasionally in the same room. - kta

The financial crisis in the country is making it harder for students to continue with their education and to find the money for initiation fees. - lit

- Representing a growing academic discipline, Lambda Pi Eta has the potential to grow substantially in years to come - lpe

Reductions in force that limit advisory capability of staff and faculty. Questionable focus of some colleges and university administrators away from the vitality of student life and the contribution that student leadership can have on a campus. Ever-increasing costs of college make affording memberships difficult. - mb

* With the popularity of the marketing major, our applicant pool will continue to grow * We need to continue to be vigilant with our faculty nominators to ensure that they have all the materials that they need to get us nominees in a timely fashion - mkt

cost of education increasing - nscs

The escalating costs of higher education are having an impact. Students do not have discretionary funds to support extracurricular activities, such as membership fees in honor societies. They also tend to work while attending school, which cuts into their time to devote to chapter activities and service projects. There are several extracurricular options for our students. They are becoming more selective about what they participate in. - oce

Our primary concern is that the growing economic crisis and the devastating impact it has had on higher education will negatively effect the society through decreasing membership, overextended and overworked faculty advisors, and possible decreased attendance at our national meeting. - pat

The option to increase participation by lowering the standards - pes

Internet degrees. Commuter colleges. - ps

Rising costs may impact membership, both because of possible lower enrollments and because students may have difficulty with the membership fee (though we have kept our membership fee quite low). We did not appear to be affected this year, however. - pst

Virtual Campuses Restructuring of Colleges within Institutions - puo

Less students going into the public service field on the local and state level because jobs are not as prominent as on the federal level. Schools tuition increase which causes students to think twice about joining an honor society. Budget cuts. - paa

Changes in general education requirements. French has become a LCT (Less commonly taught) language. - pdp

We have broadened our definition of the English Honor Society given the changing educational classifications. This allows us to encompass more majors and promote honor societies as a competitive advantage given the trend of colleges competing for students. We are also looking into distance (online) education and the implications for honor societies. - std

Increasing reluctance of university officials and attorneys to allow delivery of lists of eligible members to TBP headquarters. Difficulty in filling 4 advisor positions per chapter. Continuing grade inflation raising expectations. The negative effect on all honor societies because of the tendency of some so-called honor societies to grant membership based on academics without due consideration of exemplary character. - tbp

Broader appreciation of the role of religion and theology in social issues has brought an increase in the number of students studying in our fields; student facility with online resources has meant a huge uptick in student-generated email correspondence relative to chartering chapters and advancing local activities. The above statement from 2008 held true for 2009. - tak

After several years of declining enrollments, computer science programs around the country have been experiencing stable, if not increased, enrollments. This has had a positive impact in UPE memberships during the past two years. - upe
